

Maybe my issue with Sonic now is part of a wider problem inherent in engaging with art. I thoroughly enjoyed those comics, but they never quite captured the vibe it seemed to convey so easily.

When I had a chance to buy real-world comics off the rack at our local grocery store, I’d dabble with the Star Wars series of Spider-Man and the Dark Horse, but I honestly did it whenever I could beg for money. The early ’00s version where Sonic was defined by harsh lines, sci-fi steel, and provocative, shadowy backgrounds. I spent hours lying in my bed, sad synth saxophone music playing my CRT’s tinny speakers, as I watched Sonic’s design evolution from its goofy early ’90s iteration (where Sally Acorn was pink for some reason). The memory of paging through fields of scanned art (complete with the sounds of pages every time you move to the next cover) burns through my mind.

This section only consisted of a full comic, but it went up to that point with Sonic’s cover of the entire Archie Comics. But, it was the comics section that set my imagination on fire.

Pictures were fine, and the cutscenes in the movie section (including the early animation from the Sonic CD) were pacified. This mode included three different collections: Comics, Pictures and Movies. Instead, the main draw of the collection, for me at least, were the extras. I enjoyed those games, but wouldn’t beat any of them until years later with the advent of Save States.
