So I am always looking for a photoshop alternative that runs as lean as it should, yet handles 16 bits per channel and loads/saves psd files. It takes twice the memory, and twice the time to process a tenth of that data and write it back out to a file. Just about anything is better than photoshop for this. Often I'll need to take some of that out to a 2D application for precise adjustments. It's not unusual to be painting detail on 20 image channels mapped over millions of polygons. I do 3D modeling for a living, so often have five heavy applications running at once. Photoshop Elements is effectively an Air app sitting on photoshop core, and hopelessly cobbled and nobbled into being. It doesn't crash much, but is hopelessly bloated in other ways.

Subsequent versions of photoshop for mac have remained poorly built and optimized. So photoshop CS on a modern mac is an intel machine emulating a power pc machine emulating a windows intel machine. It arrived years late, and by the time it did apple was already using intel processors. CS was developed on the windows platform first, then ported. Prior to that the mac version was developed first, then both in tandem. On the mac plaftorm Photoshop fell off the wagon with the first CS version.

Again, please ignore their terribly designed website and just google some reviews if you are interested. Just thought I'd mention it in case it could be useful to others. I'll keep evaluating it for a while, but I have a feeling this may replace PS elements (and perhaps pixelmator) for most of my pipeline. (I am planning to use it as the external editor for aperture, 3d-coat, blender etc.) It boots in seconds, so could make a great utility editor. adjustment layers, RAW support - features lacking in most alternative editors. Many complex features from photoshop are in there, eg.

There's full 48 bit image support, display proofing, and a very powerful toolset. The program itself, while quirky, feels very powerful. but I often find them lacking in various functions such as 16 bit support, or to heavy to run alongside other applications. Many good alternatives exist gimp, pixelmator for mac, acorn etc. PS elements is too dumbed down and hinky for me to use.

I'm always looking for a good alternative to photoshop.
